Teaching will always take place in a modern and reliable car

I replace my car approximately every two years, so that the teaching will always take place in a modern and reliable car. The vehicle I currently have is a manual 5-door Hyundai i20. I am finding it to be an excellent car and all my pupils enjoy learning and driving in it.

As you would expect, it includes all the usual requirements of a comfortable drive, including an adjustable steering column, air-conditioning, plus driver/front passenger airbags and fitted dual controls for increased safety.

Before you start

Before you start your driving lessons you will need to have a provisional driving license. If you do not have one you will need to apply for one via the DVLA website. You can also pick up an application form at your local post office.

If you are under 17 do not worry, you can apply for your provisional 3 months prior to your 17th birthday. However, it will only become valid once you are 17 years old.

Your provisional licence enables you to start your driving lessons, however it does not enable you to book your driving test until you have passed the theory test.

You can book your theory test within a few days of wanting to take it and you usually get told your result on the day of the test as to whether or not you have passed. If you have your provisional license prior to your 17th birthday then you can go ahead and book your theory test and you can even take it on your birthday. For further help on booking a theory test please do not hesitate to contact the instructor.

The waiting time for a driving test is usually 6 – 10 weeks. Earlier dates are usually available through test appointment cancellations. The closest Theory Test centre is Fareham. You can take your theory test at any time during your learning but I always recommend to try and take it as early as possible as early learning will mean you can ask me for help during lessons on various aspects and it will help you understand the road more.

Once you pass your theory test then I will be more than happy to book your driving test when I feel the time is right.

Theory test

Before you can book your theory test you will need to have a provisional driving license. You can book your theory test as soon as you have your provisional licence providing you are 17 years of age.

The theory test is split up into two parts, the multiple-choice part and the hazard perception part. In order to pass your theory test you will NEED to pass both parts of the test. Once the theory test is passed you can then go on and book your practical driving test.

The questions in each multiple-choice test vary according to the category of vehicle you’re hoping to obtain a licence for ie a motorcycle theory test will contain specific questions that don’t appear in any other test.

  • How the test works

The multiple-choice part is delivered using either a touch screen computer or a mouse to decide the answer to each question. The hazard perception test is delivered by the computer responding to the click of the mouse during a series of videos.

Please note – You cannot take your practical test until you pass your theory test

  • How you should prepare

In order to prepare for the theory test the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) recommend that you study the highway code, know your traffic signs and practice sample questions as much as possible. I can always help assist in any problems you have throughout the lessons or over the phone.

With your first theory test booking confirmation letter, DSA send you a DVD called “Are you ready?” which you should watch as this explains the process of taking the theory test in even more detail than on this website.

DSA provide an online service allowing you to practice and test your knowledge on the Highway Code, traffic signs and get used to the multiple-choice style questions. The practice theory tests only contain multiple choice questions and do not allow you to practise the hazard perception test online. Please note that repeatedly passing this practice test does not guarantee you pass the real test under real exam conditions. The link below will take you to this online service.

  • General Theory Test information

In order to go onto taking a test for a new category of vehicle, you will need to take a theory test. For example, if you have a car licence and you want a motor vehicle licence you will need to take another theory test.

However, if you want to upgrade within a vehicle category for example, automatic car licence to manual car licence you will not have to take another theory test.

  • The Theory Test – Part One

Before the test starts you will be given a set of instructions on how the test works. You can also choose an option to have a few practice questions to get used to the layout and environment of the exam before you take the real thing.

Each question will have 4 answers to choose from and you will need to choose the correct one, some questions may require more than one answer. You can move between questions and ‘flag’ questions that you want to come back to later in the test.

You will be asked 50 questions in 57 minutes and the pass mark is 43 out of 50.

You can navigate between questions and ‘flag’ questions that you want to come back to later in the test. After the multiple choice part, you can choose to have a break of up to three minutes before the hazard perception part starts.

  • The Theory Test – Part Two

After the break, you will be shown a short clip on how this part of the test works. This test is also delivered on the computer but involves clicking on the mouse at certain points in each videos clip and this click is recorded. You will work through 14 different videos clips which feature everyday road scenes. In every clip there will be 1 developing hazard and on one clip there will be two.

To achieve a high score you’ll need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five. You won’t be able to review your answers to the hazard perception test; as on the road, you’ll only have one chance to respond to the developing hazard.

The pass mark for this part of the test is 44 of out 75.

  • After the test

After the test you will be asked to answer a number of customer survey questions. You don’t have to answer the questions if you don’t want to, and any information given is anonymous and confidential. The survey questions don’t affect the result of the test.

When you have finished the test you may leave the examination room. Once you have left the room, you’ll not be allowed to enter it again. You’ll then be given your result by the test centre staff.

Practical driving test

The driving test lasts for approximately 40 minutes and is designed to make you the driver show your practical skills and the understanding of the theory behind it alongside the Highway Code. The examiner sat in the car with you will be looking for the overall safe standard of driving.

NOTE: There are no pass or fail quotas!

  • Vehicles you can’t use in the test

If you are planning on using your own car there are some that cannot be used for safety reasons. You’ll need to check that a recall or safety notice does not affect the car you want to use.

List of makes and models that are affected

Once the test if over you will be informed if you have passed or not by the examiner. You can always ask for feedback from the test whether you pass or fail. Feel free to call me over once the test is finished to discuss the feedback with you and the examiner.

  • What happens in the test

The test starts off with an ability check on the following:

    1. Sight check by the examiner asking you to read out a number plate on a car at the distance of 20 metres. If you can not read the number plate, the test will be terminated.

    2. Asking to show and or tell how to do certain vehicle checks. The examiner will ask you one 'Tell me’ question at the driving test centre, where you’ll have to show them how you’d carry out a vehicle safety check, for example to check the oil etc. Then on the test, you’ll also be asked one ‘show me’ question, where you’ll have to explain to the examiner how you’d carry out the check, for example how to demist the front windscreen while driving.

Car ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions

The driving will last around 40 minutes and the examiner will give you directions to follow. You will be taken along routes of various traffic and surrounding conditions and you may be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

Candidates may also be asked to follow directions from a sat nav for 20 minutes. The examiner will provide the sat nav and set it up. You won’t need to set the route - the examiner will do this for you.

The examiner will test your reversing skills by either:

•.     Parallel parking behind a parked car

    •      Reverse parking into a parking bay at the driving test center.

    •      Drive into a car park, anywhere on the test route, and will ask you to drive forwards (Left or Right)

    •      Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic, and reverse back two car lengths. Then, you will be asked to pull off again when it's safe to do so.

When you take your practical test, you will need to take your driving license along with your theory test certificate. Failure to produce these on your test will result in you being unable to take the test. I will explain everything in much more detail nearer the time.

  • When you pass the test

The examiner will keep your provisional licence and your driving licence card will be sent through the post within 4 weeks. You will be issued a pass certificate to prove you have passed your driving test.

You can then go onto take your pass plus test with me if you wish. For more information on what the test involves click on the link below.
